11 Tips For Making Sunscreen More Effective

It plays a crucial role in shielding our skin from the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

In this post, we will share 11 tips to help you make sunscreen work better and enhance its effectiveness in safeguarding your skin.

How Does Sunscreen Work? 

Sunscreen, also known as sunblock or sun cream, is a topical product designed to protect the skin from the sun's harmful UV radiation. It contains a combination of active ingredients that work together to absorb, reflect, or scatter UV rays, thus reducing their penetration into the skin. Sunscreen contains active ingredients that act as filters, absorbing or reflecting UV radiation. There are two main types: chemical sunscreens and mineral sunscreens. 

How Do You Apply Sunscreen Correctly? 

1. Always Choose Broad-Spectrum Sunscreens

Both UVA and UVB rays contribute to premature aging and increase the risk of skin cancer. Choose broad-spectrum sunscreens that provide protection against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for products labeled as "broad-spectrum" to ensure comprehensive coverage against the full spectrum of UV radiation.

2. Select a Suitable Sun Protection Factor (SPF)

Choose a sunscreen with an appropriate Sun Protection Factor (SPF) that matches your needs. SPF 30 is generally recommended as a minimum and provides 97 percent protection against UVB rays. Remember that no sunscreen can offer complete protection against UVB rays, regardless of its SPF.

3. Apply Sunscreen Generously

Studies show that most people don’t apply enough sunscreen to get adequate protection. Don't skimp on sunscreen application. Use a liberal amount to cover all exposed areas of your skin adequately. A general guideline is to apply at least one ounce (about a shot glass full) of sunscreen to cover your entire body.

4. Apply Sunscreen 15 to 30 Minutes Before Sun Exposure

To allow the sunscreen to bond with your skin and provide optimal protection, apply it at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. This gives the sunscreen enough time to be absorbed properly.

5. Reapply Sunscreen Regularly

Sunscreen wears off over time due to sweat, rubbing, and environmental factors. Reapply sunscreen every two hours—or more frequently if you are swimming or sweating profusely. Regardless of the water-resistant claims of a sunscreen, reapplication is necessary for continued protection.

6. Don't Forget Often-Neglected Areas

Ensure you cover all exposed areas, including commonly neglected spots such as the ears, back of the neck, hands, feet, and lips. Use lip balm with SPF to protect your lips from the sun's harmful rays. Also, don’t forget to always protect the areas around your eyes. 

7. Seek Shade During Peak Sun Hours

Even with sunscreen, it's wise to seek shade during the peak hours of sun intensity, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Limit your sun exposure during this time to further reduce the risk of sun damage.

8. Wear Protective Clothing

Don’t rely on sunscreen as your sole defense against the sun. Wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses with UV protection. This additional barrier can significantly enhance your sun protection efforts.

9. Check Sunscreen Expiry Dates

Expired sunscreen may lose its effectiveness, so be sure to check the expiry date before use. If your sunscreen has expired, replace it with a new one to ensure proper protection. If you’ve had the sunscreen for a long time, shake it before you apply it. 

10. Think About Your Environment

Your location will affect how you’re exposed to UV rays. If you’re closer to the equator or at a higher altitude, the rays will be more intense. Your skin will also need protection on overcast or cloudy days. 

11. Practice Consistent Sunscreen Use

Make sunscreen a regular part of your daily routine, regardless of the weather or the season. UV radiation can penetrate clouds and cause skin damage even on cloudy days, so don't skip sunscreen application.
