A Dad's Guide To Fertility Treatment
Whether you have had children before or are yet to become a dad, there may be a time in your life when you and your partner will need help with fertility. You may start a family with a new partner, or you might have your last child in several years. If both you and your partner are older, it increases the chances that you will need assistance with fertility or seek specialist help at places like Fertility Plus. If you do go through this, it can be such a rollercoaster of a journey. Here are a few pieces of advice, should you ever need them.
You Will Experience All Kinds Of Emotions
Be prepared to feel a lot of different emotions. You might be quite anxious about the whole IVF process to start with. You might get quite excited about the prospect of a new baby. There is a whole lot of stress and anxiousness that comes with the territory. It is a good idea to be prepared for this and have some coping strategies in place. You need some time alone in your man cave? Then make sure you have time for that. Just be open and honest with your partner. She will feel just as emotional, if not more, during the process.
Support Your Partner
Your partner will be the one having to have injections into her stomach each morning. She will be feeling a lot of emotions too as she prepares to have a new baby. She will feel like a lot of this is ‘up to her’ so make sure she feels extra loved and appreciated. Doing a few small gestures will make the world of difference to her. Make her favourite meal or if you have other children, arrange for a babysitter so that you can have an evening out together. Being in this process completely together is so important.
During IVF, she will be having more hormones flying around her body than normal. This might not affect her but for a lot of women it does. It might make her tired or irritable. So just be on the lookout and avoid blaming her. You don’t want the stress of a rocky relationship on top of going through fertility treatment.
Be Prepared For Disappointment
It can be easy to get distracted with things and just assume that IVF is going to work. Avoid buying baby clothes or toys until you are pregnant and well into the second trimester. Sadly, not everyone that goes through fertility treatment is successful in having a baby. You need to have this in mind so that you are prepared for the worst case scenario.
Read About Other People’s Stories
With the number of blogs and parenting forums online now, there will be a wealth of experience to read. Go through some stories together to get some first-hand advice on how it will be. I have read from a couple that went through IVF, that it is a good idea not to plan any trips or holidays when you are going through it. Knowledge like this can only be gotten by someone that has experienced it themself.
