5 Effective Homeschooling Tips For Parents This Summer

In 2018, there were over 1.5 million children ages 5-17 that were homeschooled. This past year due to COVID-19 schools in 48 states closed their doors a few months early, leaving many parents to 'do school at home' with the help of teachers via online learning.

Whether you're already a homeschooling parent, or a public school parent, over the summer, children need some extra academic work and homeschooling tips to keep their brains sharp and prepared for the coming school year. Going to school 9 months out of the year and then returning only to forget everything is quite unfortunate!

So, here are some homeschooling tips to keep your child's memory fresh and to fine-tune those skills they learn in school.

1. Read

Above all else, read books!

Set aside a time each day for your children to engage in quiet reading. This could be individual reading time or reading together as a family out loud. While children might read while they're in school, it should also be encouraged at home to continue to develop vocabulary and comprehension skills.

Don't aim to just picture books! Choose a chapter book and read aloud to your children at bedtime.

2. Math Games or Programs

Math is another area that will need refining over the summer, and there are plenty of options!

If you have a tablet, iPad, or similar electronic device you can easily download apps with games that are perfect for kids at any age or grade level. Remember to limit your child's screen time.

Workbooks and other educational activities are also an option like those from Touch Points Math, that encourage auditory learners to apply and comprehend math concepts.

3. Make A Schedule

Do you dread hearing the phrase, "I'm bored!" from your children? You're not alone!

For the summer, write out a schedule of things you and your children might want to do. This could include activities, trips, vacations, science projects, nature walks, playground visits, seeing relatives, chores, quiet times, free time, and anything else you want to include.

Summer is a time for fun and freedom, but children do better with a schedule. Knowing what to expect will make everyone's day easier and avoid the ever-looming boredom.

4. Writing

If your child is old enough, make sure they keep up practicing their letters, words, and spelling.

This does not have to be academic - make it fun! Buy them a journal and allow them to decorate it. Then, allow 10-15 minutes a day (depending on age) to write in their journal about anything they want, or assign a fun, goofy, or serious topic.

5. Do What Your Children Love to Do

Does your child love to bake, paint, or take pictures? Summertime is the perfect time to pursue these passions!

Let your child choose a recipe and make it, or paint pictures outside, or anything! Allowing your child to explore their current passions will enrich their lives.
