To all the fathers out there: Your words are very powerful, use them wisely! It was my daddy who taught me to value and accept myself, he told me that I was exceptionally beautiful and that I was the most valuable thing in life. And you know what? I believed every word that he said. My friend Tommy was not as fortunate as I was. He had a father who threw ugly words at him every day. He told him that he was an idiot, he told him that he was a loser and worst of all, he ignored him when he tried to get his attention. Tommy is an adult now but, to this date, those words’ and his father’s action in the past continue to negatively affect his life.

The reality is that many children (regardless of their gender, race, denomination or cultural background) grow up hearing and believing words that come from the mouths of their dads. Some fathers say positive things to their children which build them up and give them wings to soar like eagles, other fathers chose to use negative words to their children which knock them straight to the ground and destroy them.

As fathers, it is very important for you to know some of the things that you should or should never say to your child because the words that you use has a lifetime influence on your child’s life.

Never Call Your Child An Idiot Or A Loser

Calling your child negative names like “idiot” or “loser” will damage his or her self-esteem. These words are like bombs that shatter and destroy life. Use them and your child will feel as if he or she does not matter and they will always see themselves in a negative way.

Do Not Ignore Your Child Or Children

You may think that saying nothing will do no harm to your child but the reality is that ignoring your child is just as bad as calling your child hurtful names. Tommy always spoke about wanting to get his father’s attention. When he got a good grade on a test or when something exciting happened at school, he wanted his daddy to hear all about it but, his dad did not care and showed no interest in what he had to say. This made Tommy really sad. Can you imagine how he felt?

Tell Your Children That They Are Unique, Special And Talented

When you use kind words to your children (all day, every day) it builds them up and motivates them to shine like diamonds. These words boost their self-esteem and help them to become confident individuals who are not afraid to speak up, speak out or try new things. They are also not afraid to fail because they know that whether or not they fail, they will forever be special in their own way.

Tell Your Children That You Love Them

Everybody wants to be loved. I want to be loved, you want to be loved and our children want to be loved. So show them that you love them and tell them that you love them too. It will warm their heart when you say it to them and they will know that you will always be there for them, loving and protecting them until the end of time.

Fathers, beware of your words as you say them. Words are very powerful and we never know how they will influence our children’s life. Some words are like cancer it knocks them down and rips them apart while some words are like natural fertilizers they give them the power to grow fruitfully. Always choose your words wisely and always speak out of love.
