The Dad's Guide To A Beach Day With The Kids - What You Want To Be Sure To Pack

Now that summer is in full swing and the kids are out of school for the season, it’s time to start thinking of activities that keep them busy and happy. Summer, sun, and warm temperatures make for the perfect ingredients for a day at the beach. The kids will get a healthy dose of vitamin D, plenty of exercise, and it’s a wonderful way to spend time together. Now before you head out to the beach for a day filled with fun, sun, sand, and surf, here’s a list of items you’ll want to be sure that you pack.

Sun Protection is a Must

Because sunburns can happen so quickly and easily, bringing adequate sun protection is an absolute must. This includes SPF sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses to protect the eyes with UV protection being a must, a sun umbrella for shade if needed, and if you want to go the extra mile – a rash guard (swim top) with built-in SPF protection. You can even find swimsuits and water shoes for kids that now have SPF in them, which means their skin under the clothing will also be protected.

When shopping for SPF sunscreen, be sure to opt for a high level of SPF, look for something that is water resistant, and of course, be sure to reapply often and after they swim. If you have kids that don’t like the sticky feeling that sunscreen leaves behind, look for ones that have dry touch, or dry to a powder finish.

Snacks and Hydration

You’ll also want to bring along a cooler filled with snacks and plenty of beverages for hydration. Staying hydrated while playing in the sun all day means they will need to drink lots, and water is always your best bet. Waiting until they say they are thirsty means you've waited too long. They should be drinking all day long. This blog from Bevi, titled Tips for Staying Hydrated, is filled with a number of great suggestions that you can use such as using a re-useable water bottle (each kid can have their own), how you can jazz up the flavor a bit, how you can tell you are dehydrated by the color of your urine, and more.

As for the snacks, opt for high protein snacks that will fill them up and keep them energized. Protein bars, granola bars, and trail mix are great ideas. You can also pack sandwiches and fresh fruit.

Water and Sand Toys

Of course, it’s also a good idea to pack some water and sand toys to help keep the kids amused. A couple of sand pails and shovels will allow them to get creative, and float toys can make riding the waves a whole lot more fun.

A Beach Blanket

Rather than using your towels on the sand and getting them all dirty, it’s a good idea to pack an oversized beach blanket that everyone can lounge on. Look for a plastic backed one so it doesn’t pick up the sand when you are ready to pack up.
