5 Ideas For A Family Video
Being a parent is an amazing experience, but it also comes with very painful situations. One day, we’re all having fun together, the next, our kids are off to college, and we rarely see them. So let’s preserve those precious memories by making videos.
It’s strange to think that we needed a huge camera and film to make a video. Now, it’s easier than ever, all we need is a phone with a decent camera and a bit of creativity. If you’re on board, we’d like to give you five unique family video ideas.
1. Family Game Night
Remember when you were a child, and you had a game night with your parents? Well, it’s a perfect way to set the stage for a great video. The entire family can choose which game to play, and you can have it all on tape.
It’s best to choose a board game everybody finds fun, or you can pick one of many RPGs (Role–Playing Games). Make no mistakes, your children will have a lot of fun, and you’ll have a blast too.
Everybody can pick their role, an elf, a wizard, a warrior, etc. Imagine catching those moments on camera. The experience is amazing, and the video itself will be goofy to you and the kids when they get older.
Just take your time to plan the way you record the game. You don’t want to miss any important details, plus it’s difficult to edit a family video. No worries, we’re not pros either, but some editing software like DaVinci Resolve or FlexClip helps.
2. Make–Believe Vacation or a Real One
During the entire time we spent at home with our family, we got the creative wheels going. That’s why it’s great to record a make-believe vacation. Or you can use some tricks to record a plane trip.
For example, you can cast an image of the sky and clouds on your TV, use a new toilet seat as the frame, and record a family member pretending they’re on a plane. Just hold the toilet seat parallel to the TV screen and get someone to sit next to it.
Another thing you can do is pretend you’re at the restaurant, your kids are the customers, and you are the waiter. Set the ambient, make a nice dish, and don’t forget to record the whole thing, even the cooking process.
If you don’t like to pretend, and you’re actually going on a vacation, pick a suitable location to record the video. Family video locations are locations that are quiet, not crowded, and meaningful.
Remember that cabin you’ve been going to for years? Why not take a trip to the lake with the entire family and capture it on video?
3. Time-Lapse Video
Remember when those videos of people changing every day over time (growing older) were viral. Believe it or not, it’s still an impressive sight to see because people love seeing change. Plus, you’ll get to re-watch your children grow and mature.
However, taking a picture every day isn’t easy, especially if you want to take it with the entire family to make a video later. It’s almost impossible to get everybody into the same position as the day before.
So, it might be good to put a piece of cardboard behind the camera with directions for everybody to look at, just so they know what they need to do. Remember, this is nearly impossible with younger children, but it’s so worth it later in life.
If you don’t want a regular family time-lapse video, you can tell everybody to make a different goofy face every day. It takes guts to be that kind of dad, but it always pays off. The kids are going to love it.
4. Karaoke Night With the Family
Karaoke can be a great Saturday night, but it can also be a great time with your family. If you’ve done it a few times, you know how fun and awkward it can be. It’s a great way for kids to deal with stage fright, especially when you film the whole thing.
Everyone can pick their favorite song and sing it on a karaoke machine, or you can pick a topic. You can sing songs from one genre, the kids can sing children’s songs or Disney songs. Also, the entire family can sing songs from a particular time period.
One issue you may encounter when filming family karaoke is the sound in the video. If you’re not using a separate mic to capture your family’s singing, then we recommend using a video volume booster.
Even though you’ll have a great video memory of your family singing, you’ll also want the videos to have pleasant audio.
5. Family Movie
It’s difficult to make a scripted video because everybody has to rehearse their role. That’s why it can be so much fun when it’s spontaneous. You can make your own family video script. Make your own movie.
An idea for this is to pick the good guys, the bad guys and make an interesting plot. Also, you can switch roles in the end. Make the scenery using cardboard and other materials you can find in your household.
Also, you can recreate one of your favorite movies. Dress your kids up to be superheroes, and you can be the villain, or recreate Star Wars. Make a lightsaber using a broomstick and some colored duct tape, and add special effects to the video when you’re done filming.
Make Your Family Video Count
Of course, every video that you have of your family together counts, but it can be much more memorable and enjoyable for the kids. Adorable reactions, goofy moments, and precious time make a great family video.
Finally, here are some tips on how to film your kids properly:
● Goofy, goofy, and more goofy: It’s only natural that this will help your kids relax and make for a better video.
● Natural behavior: Don’t make your children act as you want them to, even if it’s a scripted video. When it’s natural, it’s much more fun and much better.
● Enjoy the filming: When your kids see that you’re having fun, they’ll have fun too. This is key for a good family video.
● Shoot from different angles: It doesn’t have to be the same scene, you can continue shooting from different angles and do the editing after.
There are more things you can do, and we recommend reviewing Taking Amazing Videos of Your Kids just to improve your dad film–maker game.
So, how much does a family video cost? It depends on what you’re using to record it and if the editing software is free. If you go all original with the video, no editing, then it’s free. The only thing you’ll spend is your time, and you’ll love it.
