Top 5 Myths About Parenthood
Becoming a parent is one of the best feelings in the world. Despite this, you need to be prepared for some inevitable changes in your personal life. You’re not going to have as much free time anymore, and you need to adapt to your new situation accordingly. That being said, there’s a bunch of ugly rumors about parenthood that just aren’t true. We’ve put together a list of the top 5 myths about parenting that have been over-dramatised over the years.
The Terrible Twos
You’ve heard this saying before, and it’s fair to say that kids express themselves much more at this age. That doesn’t mean that it has to be a bad thing. Allow your child to explore the world and familiarize themselves with what’s out there. At this age, children tend to hate the word “no”, as they fight for their independence. Use different phrases, and utilize new tactics that other parents have suggested to combat this difficult stage in a child’s life.
Your Attentiveness Will Never Drop
It’s great to show passion for your kids’ well-being. Unfortunately, staying attentive on top of other commitments is a grueling task. After a long day at work, the last thing you want to do is play with your kids’ wrestling toys. But, as much as you’ll force yourself to keep doing it, there will come a time when you just can’t. Don’t beat yourself up. 30 minutes in front of the TV isn’t going to cripple your child, no matter what the media might say.
Your Kids Will View You As “Old”
Some Dads appear to think that parenthood defines them as an “oldie”. Suddenly, it’s acceptable to comment on how you’re “too old” to play sports, run around or even play video games with your kids. Get out of that mindset right now. If your child likes football, go to the park and play. Don’t slack on your fashion sense either. Men’s Irish sweaters are all the rage at the moment; combine one of those with a scarf and you’ll be able to play outside all year round in comfort and style. There’s no reason to feel old as a father; it’s the beginning of an exciting new life.
Your Sex Life Will Worsen
You’ve heard the myths about this one. Yes, parenting will put a lot of stresses on a family. If you don’t want this myth to turn into a reality, both of you need to work hard on your mentalities. When things start to struggle in the bedroom, find ways to show affection to one another. It’s easy to neglect your relationship when you’re time is dedicated to your child, but you must work hard to sustain it.
You Must Show Discipline At All Times
It’s common to see kids misbehaving in public and assuming that they have been spoilt. You start to tell yourself that you won’t allow your child to act that way. There’s a time and a place for discipline, though. Being young is an exciting, explorative time, and you don’t want to ruin that. Find a nice balance between discipline and fun, and your child will turn out just fine.
Above all, enjoy parenthood! It’s a wonderful time in your life so cherish it, and don’t stress too much.
